Just been looking at the Works and saw this from Ian.

Following a busy season in Scotland, 45407 has worked the last two days on the East Lancs prior to annual scheduled maintenance.

Today saw both sets of piston valves withdrawn, all coupling rods and connecting rods removed and transported to the works for attention, work on removing the elements, flue and smoke tubes will commence tomorrow.

45407 and 45212 are required back in Fort William by Easter at the latest.

44871 will join them in Lochaber once it has a full boiler overhaul, chassis lift and complete 10 year overhaul, again, also hopefully by Easter..

I wish him and the team well as it looks like they are going to be rather busy for the next few months.

With those turn around times it sounds more like Crewe Works in steam days! Impressive.

45407 and 44871 must be some of the most reliable performers on the main line- do any other locos have such an intensive program and such high availability?

46233 and 62005 are the only others that come immediately to mind?

In the summer especially many of the Carnforth based engines are well up there apart from this year obviously - where I imagine income has taken a pounding from the cancellation of most of the regular stuff due to the closed SC. Likewise RAH from Tyseley gets lots of summer use.

The Tyseley fleet doesn't see anything remotely like the mileage Riley's fives rack up.

I'd add Clan Line to the list but, like the Tyseley locos, although very reliable, it doesn't clock up the miles of the Riley duo.

That is unarguable. The summary of the maintenance work ahead underlines the basis upon which the reliability is achieved. Factor in 60009 and 60103 support as well as the sundry contract jobs, it really is a remarkable operation.
