As it may be possible to gather from some of my posts, I run Israel Newton & Sons, a heritage boilersmiths based in Cromford, Derbyshire. We do contract boiler work on railway locomotives, traction engines and other steam powered equipment, as well as supplying parts (particularly pressed plates) across the heritage steam industry.

We're looking to expand our small but dedicated team, and are looking for the right individual to join us. I'd be interested in hearing both from experienced people who fancy a change of scenery, and also from those who think this could be a new career for them. No previous experience required, although relevant experience is always helpful - we're really looking for someone with the right attitudes and aptitudes as we can supply full training; I myself joined the firm aged 25 having previously been a stock controller in manufacturing, hardly an obvious career pathway!

We offer very competitive rates of pay and (usually!) a relaxed and flexible working environment - my goal is to for us to be somewhere where our staff enjoy being at work, whilst delivering what our customers need!

If any of this appeals, please do get in touch with me, either by a message on here, or email john {at} israelnewton.co.uk

Attached are a few random relevant photos for interest.

Gosh! That will be a good job for someone.

    Anyone got Guy Martin's number...?

Hope you find the right person.

Can’t speak too highly about John and his team. Full of enthusiasm. Last week I phoned him about a rush job; not a big one but something I couldn’t do as it was a pressing. When do you want it? Tomorrow was my reply. I delivered the sample the next day and got it the day after.

Blimey! I'd absolutely love this opportunity, particularly as life in my current job isn't anywhere near enjoyable.... Such a pity I couldn't feasibly commute to Cromford from Halifax every day, otherwise I'd definitely be up for it. What a set of skills to have the opportunity to learn from scratch.

Just out of interest is this the same company which used to be based in Bradford, West Yorkshire, at the romantically named "All Alone Road".

This is an update message for you all.

We gather that the engineering company Israel Newton has been able to fill its boilersmith vacancy through the publicity given on here and the responses received.

This is really good news because "bringing the heritage community together" is what Nat Pres is about and this is a great example of it in action.

So thanks to all who responded.

Great news, both for Nat Pres and for John, as well.

Just a quick bump to this.
We took someone on via this message board last year, who has been a great addition to the team, and now we're after another victim member of staff.

Very much as per my original posting, we're after the right person, experienced or not to come and build/repair boilers with us. We've a nice full orderbook, a variety of interesting work, a selection of antique equipment (and a few bits which are almost state of the art), a workshop with a heater that works, even a big box of teabags in the brew room... all we need is you! Full training can be provided to the right applicant, although we'd also welcome enquiries from those with experience of working on boilers.

It's almost three years since I created this post - and so far I've gained two great employees via National Preservation, so maybe this site should become a recruitment agency!

Anyway, the order book is still full, and I'm thinking about expanding again. If you fancy a bit of boiler bashing, are practical, hardworking and reliable, and can commute to a site in the Derbyshire Dales I'd love to hear from you. Message me on here, or email john [at] israelnewton.co.uk

Picture of the new boiler we're currently building for the E1 at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway attached for interest.

It's good to see traditional skills are still being taught, and that its being passed on, hope your orderbooks stay healthy John, and that it enables you to continue taking on trainees, who are the future.

That website is ours, but it's miles out of date - I did a management buyout from Hal and Guy over three years ago, but have never got round to doing a new website!
