May be so but a locomotive that never even existed fits far less into a theme than a Swindon built example that did don't you think!

As i said though, it seems a continual thing for 3850 not to play a part in galas....

The Mongrel is owned by the PLC,3850 is not. Maybe that's your answer.

Don't see what your problem is 9351 may not have existed now if gwr hadn't looked into the idea of a small boilered mogul, the wsr were brave enough to go through with it she is more useful like this then in prarie form. yes to some she's unpopular but to us who call the line our local 9351 has put in a lot of hard work these past ten years, she deserves to play a part in her final gala be sad to see Frankie (frankenstein) go out of ticket even if I have been bowled by her loads.

I'm sure 3850 will play a part in the gala. She and 9351 play a part all year. So maybe if people want to see or travel behind 3850 they should come down before the gala. Not moan because its been left out of galas in the past.
But I suppose some people just like to moan about everything.

3850 works trains regularly during the season. As do 4160 and 88 and 9351. The resident Manor (Norton / Odney) less so but it is used on a lot of SEC's The contract for the Hall only allows a limited number of operating days as far as I have understood it.
The Gala is a different thing altogether. It's a mass of work for those that organise it, sleepless nights and all. Locomotives can fail , and do, at a moments notice. It's also a mass of work for those in the Motive Power Department to get everything ready. There needs to be a loco on standby in case of problems and it might well come to pass that this is 3850 which is surely better that having a diesel as the standby machine at a Gala? Anybody who is keen for a ride behind a particular loco only needs to look at the roster which West Somerset Wizard publishes on his site and make their plans accordingly.
Let's just hope for a few fine days leading up to and during the Gala.

I'm more disappointed there is no sign of a Small Prairie, 5322 or 3205 as its more a Manor Fest than Cambrian Gala, but with 6 lorries and a mainline LE run to pay for already I bet the costs aren't cheap!

Still looking forward to the gala nonetheless, first visit for a long time for myself and with Manors being my fav type of loco its personally a must see event! Be nice to see 7827 venture out as she gets withdrawn end of this year I believe?

I suspect part of the problem is the size of the passenger trains they are anticipating. Small Prairies don't always have the power (except 5542 obviously) or, more importantly, the water capacity to cope with the vagaries of a gala timetable. You can only take water easily at either end of the line and even the Large Prairie needs to be watered every 20 miles on heavy trains. Still I grant you it is a bit of a Manor-Fest. As I said though - let's hope for some fine weather for a few days.

Interesting spin, given that, if the standby were a diesel, it would follow logically that it meant 3850 was out and about!

It seems that 3850 may be on the "driver for a fiver" duty!

Not a bad idea if you have to have a loco lit up on standby duties, might as well make use of it doing something where you can make some additional income, but also very quickly stop doing so if it is suddenly needed in traffic.

True, but one common thing on the Cambrian was the variety of Double--headers. 45XX/78XX/43XX/90XX/2251 featured in various combos. Still not complaining too much mind as I appreciate the costs of what is already planned will be quite hefty. Same as you, hope they get the weather for a good turnout.

I'll definitely be there on the Thursday of this. The big question/hope for me is... will all the visitors be on passenger trains every day? I'm fortunate enough to live less than an hour away so I've had no shortage of 3850/9351/4160/7828 on service trains (kicking myself a bit for missing 6960 when I was along on a Saturday for the Western recently, expected to finish my day behind 6960 but 3850 came off a charter and took over 6960's turn)

A cheeky (very cheeky actually) request - Any chance of a bit of cutting back along the line.... looking at some of the recent shots taken there the grass along the lineside is looking a little high. Like I say, just being a bit cheeky. Would happily come along and do a bit if needed.

Thanks mate, would happily join the crew but living in Reading i'm not sure i'd able to attend enough for it to be worth while. Happy to walk about with machette during the gala though ;-)
