Many thanks Orion. Opening shot was taken roadside on the Minehead road about 0.5 miles? from Bishops Lydeard station - just before it there is a path to "Whiskey Trail Crossing". Not an ideal location for video with road traffic although there wasn't too much as it was the 8am off Bishops on Saturday -- and is the only banked train of the gala with the 2 9fs. I use a Canon HV20 camcorder with a Sennheiser mic and a Velbon V6000 fluid head tripod.

Hopefully some one can advise me! I am making my first visit to the WSR this weekend, I have pre-booked travel tickets for Friday, I understand parking at Bishops Lydeard isnt great, is it best to go for the park and ride in Taunton and get the bus? Not being local I did a quick google search for information on it and couldnt find a great deal other than some directions (which I am sure I can follow), I just want to check its what most people do! Thanks!

the parking at BL is usually OK, if you get there by 11.00 am. there is often an overflow car park in the field to the left of the car park. can't remember when it was a problem finding a space.

Thank you, I am leaving my house at 6.30am and hoping to make that train so I should be there before then! Will try the station first.

If there is no parking in the station car park they usually direct you into the field anyway,so it should be easy to tell.

Glad you enjoyed the ride, we certainly enjoyed providing it! (I was your conductor on Saturday). You can read about my day here: http://busmanjohn.wordpress.com/2010/03/21/wsr-spring-gala-shuttle-service/

  11. Thursday update:

8.20am goods cancelled - 78019 failed. Return goods working now 80104 with the two shuttle coaches...

  12. Thursday update 2:

The Bishops Lydeard overflow car park (Darby's Field) is waterlogged and will NOT be available for THURSDAY and FRIDAY. Situation will be reviewed for possible use at the weekend. Advice is to use the Silk Mill Park and Ride Car Park (west of Taunton) and then use the free WSR bus service to Bishops Lydeard (every half hour from 9am until last train).

Every 20 minutes, if traffic allows. I'm conducting tomorrow (Fri) so if you see me, say 'Hi!'

  16. FRIDAY UPDATE:

The Railway have now stated the overflow car park at Bishops Lydeard Station will not open during the coming weekend. And they are asking Gala visitors who plan drive to Bishops Lydeard Station to instead drive directly to the Silk Mill Park/Ride from where free WSR buses run every 20-30 minutes to the WSR (from 9am until the last train of the day). The bus trip is about three miles or so. A map of the Silk Mill Park/Ride can be found at http://www.wsr.org.uk/ssg2010.htm#parkride Those with wheelchairs are advised to drive to Bishops Lydeard Station which has reserved spaces.

  17. Sorry I could not respond in time, maureen. I didn't get an answer from the Railway until I had returned from photographing it. You probably know by now that it did run, hauled by No 78019.

Yes I got some nice photos of 78019, why I inquired was so I could plan my trips so as to see her if the goods ran, as I did'nt get much of a chance to take any photos of her last saturday as she was on the shuttle and the train movements on the other platform obscured a good photo, anyhow, I planned my trips as if the goods was running and was rewarded, thoroughly enjoyed my two days at the Gala particularly enjoyed the runs with 71000 the two 9F's and Braunton. Thanks to everyone at the WSR for a thoroughly enjoyable 2 days. that is a great photo you took of 78019 on the goods, thanks for that.

Just back from the gala - a very good day all round with good weather and a great range of locos all in good form. I think the new gala timetable worked very well - everything seemed a bit more relaxed, it was easy to remember what times the trains ran without having to constantly refer to the timetable and everything seemed to run on time. The only thing I couldn't work out was why so many trains non-stopped Washford and why all down trains called at Stogumber but not all up trains did. Any thoughts?
