I would think they are currently in Erudite (there beady eye is turn towards us) before they step into Factionless. Now the question is is Factionless and Faction in its own right.

On the subject (mentioned before) about independent observers or adjudicators for the vote I nominate Alf Roberts. He's not just (as far as I am aware) independent of any factions, he's in a world of his own - and you can't get more independent than that.

I'm not sure if I should say this, but Alf Roberts in Corrie was a character in a soap opera, therefore not a real person. Alf Roberts on NP is a real human being (I think) in a soap opera of his own making.

That said, and here the medication I'm taking may be kicking in, if the WSR was a soap opera - which one would it be? Who would have what roles?

I had a weird dream in a Dad's Army style the other night. The Home Guard had barricaded themselves into a village hall to repel German Paratroopers, outside there was a cast of Dad's Army characters who reminded me of one or two people on this thread...(In a humorous friendly joshing sort of a way).

I should probably also point out that down at the station the trains were running on time, the staff were doing a good job and the passengers were happy.

Make Alf chair of the meeting as well and I reckon you raise a fair amount from the ticket sales! It would be worth £20 per head to spectate surely?

 

Could this £20 per head be the answer to Alf's fuding?? He'd make enough to rebuild the entire Dunstable Linear Scrapheap..

I can recommend an advisor with experience of working with councillors to help Alf with the Dunstable scheme.

 

It would certainly be a contrast:

A man alone, possessed (seemingly) of a single clear vision and filled with determination, but with nothing of substance to show for it and no real prospect of achieving that vision.

A group of people, possessed of something of real substance and worth, a crown jewel of the preservation scene and in the here and now, but seemingly unable to come to a single shared vision.

The WSR is undoubtedly worth fighting for, I just hope that in the near future the combatants can find a way to see that it's also worth making peace for.

 

Here's an idea. Why don't Somerset Council give the lease to Network Rail and First Great Western, who've got the right credentials to run a decent public service from Taunton to Minehead without the need to harp on about the failings of each other like a load of old fishwives.

The preservation organistations could then bid to run their own rival trains over the line to supplement the public service. Or they could continue to have a lovely time bickering in public, and let the professionals get on with running their railway?

 

Now this is a novel and probably workable idea.

 

There's more to a heritage railway than trains. I can't see NR maintaining the wonderful stations and infrastructure that draw as many positive comments from our visitors as the fab motive power up front of their trains.

Actually the WSR Plc already do a fine professional job of running the WSR. And the WSRA of course have no intention of running any trains, other than their highly successful Quantock Belle dining train, which is not a rival to anything, and which also brings substantial revenue for the WSR Plc.

I think there are more than one or two people posting in "What's going on" that might disagree with you about Network Rail. Makes the last twenty or so pages on this thread seem like a vicar's tea party ...

(And I used to commute regularly on what FGW laughably called a "service". It wasn't a pleasant experience!)
