    Re: York triangle threat?

I've just received a reply from NR regarding the removal of the Engineers' Triangle. I'm assured that turning of vehicles will continue at York; the existing facility will not be removed until a replacement facility which meets the requirements of a Network Asset is in place.

    Re: York triangle threat?

They must be sending out all the replies, mine has just arrived as well. The whole email copied for those interested.

Please be re-assured that the turning of vehicles will continue at York and that the project has several turning options available to it.

The final location for a turning facility has yet to be decided but, please be reassured that the Engineers Turning Triangle will not be removed until it is replaced by a new facility which meets the requirements of a Network Asset.

    Yours sincerely

Didn't William Shakespeare write a play about this over 400 years ago?

Up at York today. I noticed that the South shed turntable pit and some of the pit roads off it had been carefully dug out. All looked in good nick. Before anyone asks, the turntable pit is not large, 50-55ft diameter at a guess.

    Re: York triangle threat?

A recent article on rail.co.uk has some interesting information on the likely replacement for the triangle.

"This has been proposed to be located adjacent to the York North Yard on the west side on a spur from the station avoiding line. The turntable currently located at Ferme Park, six miles north of Kings Cross in London, may be relocated to York for further, if unexpected use."

Sounds good if it does the job, presumably it woulden't be missed in it's current location with most steam in London turning elsewhere ?.

It's unusable at present. Nothing wrong with the table itself, the brick walls are in poor condition.

Not going to be a cheap or quick solution though is it?

Cheers for that, being at or near a working depot, I did wonder if it was occasionally used for turning class 91's and D/EMU carriages like the one at Heaton is.

    Re: York triangle threat?

It was installed in the early 70s I believe. I can't find where it was originally though. I doubt it was new. If it does move to York, there can't be many turntables that have been used on three sites.

    Re: York triangle threat?

Does Steam ever use Heaton Table when turning at Newcastle or does it do a loop via the Tyne bridges ?.

    Re: York triangle threat?

AFAIK larger locomotives are barred from the High Level Bridge, & most turns are done on the Low Fell triangle, i.e. using the south to west chord between the ECML and the Carlisle line. I think the Heaton table is used occasionally, but if you're servicing at Tyne Yard, then using Low Fell saves paths on the main line to/from Heaton. Of course, there's still the option of the triangle of lines at the south end of the King Edward Bridge, but again, paths to do this may be very limited.

    Re: York triangle threat?

Know the turntable at Heaton has been used recently to turn Bittern during servicing.

Although as Mark mentioned most servicing takes place at Tyne Yard.

Remember it is also a HST servicing facility, and could be also used to turn power cars.

On the SD trip to Durham 30/6/12 Tornado passed through Newcastle Central Station when it turned. Greensfield Junction is mentioned in the timings on UK Steam but I do not know where this is.

    Re: York triangle threat?

Greensfield Junction is at the south end of King Edward Bridge, and uses the triangle that would have went to the old gateshead depot, reverse down into ecml, or hexham branch, and then back towards newcastle, in reality have never seen this once used, the one using the hexham branch, and heading towards the mail depot at Low Fell is used instead. Servicing would take place at Tyne Yard , so from Low Fell its a straight run into stabling facilities.

The curve from the King Edward towards old gateshead depot is quite sharp, and reversing back towards the ECML/hexham line would cause quite a bit of disruption, thats why they use the low fell triangle.

We also had steam over the High Level Bridge a couple of years back when 71000 had the spad incident at Tyne Yard, then it was piloted over the High Level by a Class 66, however as pointed out must have been a one off.

    Hope this helps.
