I was up at Rowsley and helping with a few bits and bobs. There were little bits of activites going on the with groups:

Heritage Shunters Trust where continuing with the restoration of Industrial Shunter 'Bigga', concentrating on the Brake cylinder re-assembly. The class 14 was also having some cab work undertaken.
Renown Repluse Restoration Group had a couple of chaps working on the internals of one of the locos.
LMS Carriage Association turned their hand to help with the dismantling of long serving BR Mk 1 RMB, 1835, which after some 25 years service at Peak Rail is going to be taking long and well earned break to attend to some serious body work corrosion repairs.

Not sure if it has been posted before, but the Ivatt Diesel Recreation Society, who are building a replica 10000 have a promo video about there project that can be viewed here: https://lms10000.co.uk/

Also, for interest there is an update on Change.org from a group who "advocates the return of public rail to the Derbyshire Dales", namely the Matlock to Buxton line. So it seems there are three groups aiming to re-open the line, each with different interests; as a freight line, as a steam line and as a general passenger railway.

To be fair the line should be reopened as a passenger and freight route. Then you could donate the stock to the Ecclesbourne and midland railway center if they wanted/needed it.

News article about the progress the Ivatt Diesel Re-creation Society, who are building 10000, are making having now purchased the bogies for the locomotive. They managed to raise enough money in a few months to pay for them. The news article also mentions Peak Rail as where their chassis donor loco is based. Here's a link to the article:

    https://www.railadvent.co.uk/2019/0...SCRVtFGQkmdAqVOsURz8oWyeUkPMBYmJ-FkT62PXS0BoU

Here's another article about their President who used to be the commissioning engineer on 10000 and mentions how it used to run along the Peak Line:

Here's a link to a picture on Twitter of D8 on the mainline in 1970 sporting green whilst working a freight train through Leicester.

Also here is an archive film of 10000 and 10001 hauling the Royal Scot. With the Ivatt Diesel Recreation Society and the LMS Carriage Association based at Peak Rail, it will one day be possible to re-create some of the scenes in this film on the actual line which 10000 ran during its trials, namely the Peak Line. That would be a wonderful sight to see don't you think?

    Hope it is of interest.

9D9956E8-11B9-4CC4-B6A6-37E39B1B5554.jpeg Il start with my own dept first

John Andrew and myself spent yesterday getting the trap and sprung trap point ends working off the turnover frame which thanks to John working out the positions of the kickers and stops inside the boxes means we now know how to set the things up being as there’s very little literature On that and the last set at barrow hill was taken out in the eighties

The box has electricity now so

A few more weeks getting the mainline ends working (they also have facing point locks to drive so have slipping drives inside the machine) then we can tidy out the inside and give it another paint inside then onto the floor

I’ve also done some more work down church lane .

Im down on Wednesday. We realised when trying the points that when the Rowsley box lever is nearly reverse it catches the chains , hence the middle

Wheel under the lever taking the chain away from the lever, so the day will be set aside for altering the upstairs chains round the mid wheel and down to the downstairs

We also replaced a seized pulley wheel and fished loads of Cracked castings outbthe store to which we have some unbroken castings for fitting to somhave added that to the jobs list

I am also planning to finally get the cover out my boot of Car which goes over the darley right away indicator and this will be fitted Wednesday if I can find the stand off studs for it

    Other depts

The Ashover gang were doing track work and the LMSCA were busy both working on the MR brakevan which now has walls and a floor and also rebuilding the connection ends on one of the carriages , the gangway which has been removed ready for the end steel playing to be replaced, I noted the HST gang were working away but with being busy didn’t get a chance to nip in and chinwag with them

It seems there is no let up in the tenacious Ivatt Diesel Recreation Society, who are looking to build a re-creation of LMS 10000 and have a presence on Peak Rail. This week they have launched their 'Presidents Appeal'. The aim of which is to raise £100,000 over the next 12 months in time for Stan Fletcher's (their president) 100th birthday. It may sound like a tall order, and it is, but given they have managed to raise a substantial amount in the latter half of 2018 that has paid for the bogies, their transport for inspection and a number of key drawings, it is entirely achievable. There is more information on their website: https://lms10000.co.uk/presidents-appeal

And if that was not enough, they also releasing a series of videos over the next few months of an interview with Stan, who was the commissioning engineer for 10000 and 10001 between 1947 and 1950. The interview was filmed in the National Railway Museum's LMS Third Corridor, 7828, that was restored by the LMS Carriage Association and specially shunted onto the train by Peak Rail to allow the filming to take place. You can view the first of these videos via this link: https://lms10000.co.uk/stan-fletcher-video-1

They also have Facebook page which is regularly updated and contributed too: https://www.facebook.com/groups/LMS10000/

Hope it is of interest and stokes your enthusiasm. :)

5CACE625-2904-45EE-894F-5021D30A6B7A.jpeg Bit of a Busy day for folks

Harvey has been continuing with removing the old corridor connections at the ends of the other mk1 buffet coach ready for replacement and bodywork. Martin has almost finished the rewiring of the No1 end of the class 25 the chaps were busy making a covered area for working on the boilers outside and 5336 has had its new firebox frontplate (If I’ve got that right ) welded back in place

The pway chaps were out measuring up point gauging and Stuart tells me they’ve been foliage removing and sleeper changing down redhouse cutting and darley dale and myself I managed some loc and point motor repainting before doing some more work on Rowsley box

Oooo! If its going to be a picture fest then here's some pictures of the RMB. The first one shows the radiator in the vestibule, which has now been removed. and the second picture shows the corrosion and dust build up from over the years.
    [IMG] [IMG]

This next photo shows the extent of some of the corrosion on the RMB after some 25 years service at Peak Rail with very few breaks in between, so useful is the carriage. At last, though, 1835 is going to get a well earned break and some TLC for Harvey and the carriage gang:

Work also continues in the Heritage Shunters Trust on numerous fronts and they probably have the largest fleet of runable locomotives of any preservation group. One of the next in line to join the fleet, when it's overhaul is comple is sole surviving class 06, D2420 (06003) and is seen here in their shed during the latter stages of its overhaul. Interestingly the HST have an example of every class from Class 01 to Class 09 and includes the sole surviving Class 06, the first Class 08 and first Class 09:

Also some further interesting information that mentions Peak Rail. The first one is from the 'Campaign for Better Transport' and their 44 page report entitled "The Case for Expanding the Rail Network" The report covers the whole of the UK and includes the opening of the Matlock to Buxton route, mentioning Peak Rail. Below is a link to the report:

    https://bettertransport.org.uk/site...rch-files/case-for-expanding-rail-network.pdf

The second mention of Peak Rail is in a Major Article in Railway Magazine about the re-creating of LMS diesel loco 10000. It mentions how Stuart Smith, sadly no longer with us, brought the group to Peak Rail. The article also covers the engine and loco (58022) that they already have at Rowsley and the groups business plan that has been send to the Peak Rail PLC board of directors for consideration. This group seems to be going from strength to strength. I look forward to the day to see the loco running with a rake of LMS carriages behind it. We in the LMS Carriage Association had better set too! Hehehe

Little bit of a midweek update from the platforms side of things for a change

The Derwent and Wye Valley Railway Trust Ltd
    Registered Charity No 1109543
A company registered in England No. 5285448 limited by guarantee.
Registered office Matlock Station, Matlock, DE4 3NA

    4th February 2019

    Dear Friends & Donors

I am pleased to bring you this annual update on the progress made by the Trust during 2018.

The major project undertaken by the Trust during the past 12 months has been a project titled “Tracking our Heritage”.

This has been funded by an award of £10000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund “Sharing Heritage” programme for oral history projects, together with additional donations from the Peak Railway Association, Darley Dale Town Council, Matlock Town Council, local councillors and private individuals

The project has involved interviews with people who remember the Railway line between Matlock and Rowsley before it closed in 1968, and since 1975 when it was reopened by Peak Rail. Many people came forward with stories and photographs. All the information is now being processed in order to produce a booklet and audio record. The project should be completed by 28th February although it may run over a little. I will send you an update when it is completed.

In last years update I informed you that the pillars had been made for the footbridge. These have now been transferred to the Peak Rail, Rowsley site.

Those of you who have visited Darley Dale station during the past 12 months will have noticed that the outside of Darley Dale Station and toilet block have been painted during the summer. The interior of the toilets was painted as well.

    The Down Building

Derbyshire Dales District Council, who following consultation with Derbyshire County Council have now arranged for the roof to be repaired with new ridge tiles, and replacement of damaged slates. The work was scheduled to be carried out last October but an ecological survey had to be carried out to check for the presence of bats. Of course such evidence was found and as a result bat boxes have had to be installed and then when the workmen came to carry out the roof repairs the weather was against them.

I look forward to writing to you again next year with a further update on the progress made by the trust.

With best wishes and thanks for your continued support.

Parish notes from the chesterfield branch

    A message from Ted Hancock

I recently did a digital presentation at Peak Rail, Sheffield about the widening of the lines from Sheffield to Dore & Totley, and there was no hissing or booing that I could detect.

However I was not entirely satisfied with the first part in particular and I have now found more illustrations which will substantially improve it. This revised version, which from past experience will not arrive at Dore at the first attempt, is having its world premiere at Peak Rail at Chesterfield next Tues 19th Feb at 7.30 p.m. The address is Hasland Working Mens Club, Hampton Street, Hasland, Chesterfield S41 OHL. A warm welcome from David Grainger and his members is assured.

Does anyone know if Penyghent will be operating this weekend? I'm in the area and I've never had a trip behind a 'Peak'.
